The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is located Southwest of Stansted airport a distance of 35 miles that would take around 45 minutes by taxi via the M11. It is located to the east of the City of London and north of the River Thames it has a population of 256,000 according to 2011 statistics.
At the heart of the East End of London, Tower Hamlets is a mix of old and new with the historical sites of The Tower of London which is where it got its name and the redeveloped London Docklands area comprised of some of the tallest buildings in Europe. In 1078 the Tower of London was constructed by William the Conquerer with the White tower built to keep an eye on the City, small villages or hamlets were provided around the tower to man the fortress. Formerly a vast system of Docks that had made London the worlds largest port during the 19th century fell into disuse after the 1960s and in the 1980s the area was transformed into an area of major business and leisure centres.
Within the borough there are some major tourist attractions such as Canary Wharf-one of Europes largest commercial developments with offices, shops and restaurants, St Katherines Dock-one of Londons most popular waterside attractions, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Mudchute Farm and The Tower of London. There are a range of ways to see the sights of the area with river trips, guided walks and open top buses to tour around the towns within its boundaries.
